First Aid for Dental Problems

  1. Pain relief/medication- There are a variety of pain meds available and they are to be taken with care.  Always make sure these do not interfere with your prescription medicines.  If there is a question, please contact the office.

  • For Adults: Aspirin, Tylenol and Advil/Ibuprofen are the most common over the counter meds available.  The best source of pain relief is 3 Advil and 1 extra strength Tylenol four times a day if can be tolerated.
  • For children: The appropriate amount of liquid Tylenol or liquid Advil according to their weight.

Other useful items are Benadryl, Anbesol, Orabase, Orajel, Ice and Warm salt water rinses.  Please be careful with all medications!!!

  1. Toothache- Take pain medication.  If your discomfort persists, call the dentist.  Do not place aspirin directly on the teeth or gums.

  1. Cracked Tooth or Filling- If painful, take medication.  If it is sharp, use a nail file and call the dentist to get it fixed or it will only get WORSE.

  1. Bleeding Gums- Brush and floss thoroughly even though it may be tender and continue to bleed.  Rinse with warm salt water and contact the dentist.

  1. Wisdom Tooth Pain- Take pain meds.  Keep it clean and rinse with warm salt water.  Contact the dentist.

  1. Canker/Cold Sore- This condition usually resolves over 7-10 days.  Contact the dentist for a prescription product or the pharmacist for an over the counter medication.

  1. Loose Crown- Do not glue your cap/crown in.  This will damage the tooth.  Either place the cap/crown in a safe place or use Fixadent to hold the crown in temporarily.  Call the dentist.

  1. Gum Boil- If painful, take medication.  Rinse 4 times a day with warm salt water.  This is a sign that the tooth is abscessed/infected and you need to call the dentist immediately.

  1. Teething Pain- Cold objects such as a teething ring or a Popsicle usually help.  Pain meds also help with pain relief.  Teething ointments, such as Anbesol and Benadryl help the parent and child in getting some sleep!!!

  1. Chipped Baby Tooth- If painful, give the child the proper amount of pain medication.  If you notice swelling, place ice on the area and call the dentist.

  1.  Broken Denture or Partial- Do not repair the plate yourself.  This will make the situation worse.  Save all the pieces and call the dentist.

  1. Knocked our Tooth- If you have the tooth, there is a good chance it can be reimplanted.  Rinse the tooth gently and if it is not too painful, try to insert the tooth back into the socket and see the dentist immediately.  Other suggestions are rinse the tooth gently and hold it in the mouth or placed the tooth in milk and see the dentist immediately!!!
